MoistureShield Installation — Ground Contact, Spans, and Fasteners
MoistureShield's installation rules are different from other composites due to the ground-contact rating. Here is what matters:
Ground Contact — Yes, But Still Needs Ventilation
The ground-contact rating means the boards will not rot if they touch soil or sit in a puddle. It does not mean you can lay them directly on dirt with no airflow. MoistureShield still requires at least 1.5 inches of cross-ventilation under the deck frame. A ground-level deck built on concrete pads with 2x6 joists at 4 inches of clearance meets this requirement. The rating protects against splash-back rot and moisture wicking through the bottom of the board — the two failure modes that kill traditional composite on low decks.
Joist Spans — 24" OC with Fortress Sag Bar
Standard perpendicular install: 16" OC. With MoistureShield's Fortress steel sag bar (a metal channel installed between joists at the mid-span point), Meridian and Vantage boards can span 24" OC.
